What is Not Included in Your Bike Insurance?

Riding a bike is extremely exciting. But will it continue being fun if you get into an accident and your bike is rammed into a tree or building? No, right! Over the pain of that, being stressed out about the insurance takes the tension to a whole different level. Having a two-wheeler insurance, under which bike Insurance falls, is mandatory in India under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. This insurance falls under the General Insurance product category.

The two-wheeler insurance protects the people against unforeseen and unfortunate accidents that occur on the road. An active two-wheeler Insurance protects and shields the owner of the vehicle from serous damages to the vehicle that happened due to accidents and also provides any third – party that get injured financial medical aid which protects the first party from any legal actions and suits that might get posed on them. Authorized insurance companies registered under the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI) are the only companies that can provide this insurance to the two – wheeled vehicle owners.

Exclusions: You Won’t Be Getting Cover For The Following Aspects

  • Speeding AccidentsThe higher the speed, the more the risk! Riding your bike at a very high speed, talking to the wind, feeling unstoppable, the increasing of the adrenaline rush with every raise is a cloud 9 experience. The adrenaline rush is good but the rush to the hospital isn’t. If you meet with an accident because you were riding at a very high speed, that is, above the legal limit of the area, the bike insurance company will not be covering for the losses, damages and injuries that are sustained due to that accident.
  • Driving Without License – Accident
Riding your bike and getting into an accident without having a valid driver’s license will not get you the claim. The bike insurance company would not be covering for the damages to your bike or the any injuries that you sustained during an accident while riding your bike if you do not have a driver’s license or have an expired license and haven’t had it renewed at the time of the accident. Any other legal documents that you don’t have also add to this.
  • DUI – Driving Under Influence
You have a few drinks at a friend’s house, then take off and decide you ride back home. On the way back home, you crash. Now, you think you have insurance, at least so you won’t have to bear the medical and repair expenses. But you should know that no bike insurance policy will provide cover for an accident that has been under the influence. If you have been drinking before or while riding or if you are intoxicated with drugs and have been doing substance – abuse, the insurance company will simply reject the claim if you even think it is right to file one. A DUI won’t influence the bike insurance company to pay cover for your accident.
  • Machine Breakdown
The bike insurance policies only cover for unforeseen and unfortunate accidents on the road and not for accidents because of the wear and tear of the bike or the engine or any other mechanical or electrical part. If it is a very old bike and has gone through a lot of repairs and rough roads, it is not that capable of being on the road, hence, the bike insurance companies won’t cover for those either. To prevent this, you need to get your bike inspected timely or as required.
  • Drifting Far Away
If the accident unfortunately occurs outside of the geographical area that bike insurance company covers for, then that will be excluded from the coverage. If you take a trip to a nearby state on you bike or a nearby hill station, and if you meet with an accident or lose your bike, your bike insurance company won’t cover for your losses in that region.
  • Riding A Friend’s Bike
So you have a good friend who let you borrow their bike for the weekend. You have taken the bike out for a spin. And bam, you crash it! Your bike insurance policy will not be covering for the damages that have been done to your friend’s bike. The damages to your friend’s vehicle are out of the scope of the bike insurance under your name and vehicle.
  • War Damages
Any damages of thefts or vandalism that occur due to any wars, nuclear risks or mutiny in that area or region will be out of the coverage of your bike insurance as these are uncertain activities and cannot be controlled, even by the government. These are times of crisis and curfews and any accidents due to this are excluded from the coverage of the two-wheeler insurance policy.

Know what the inclusions and exclusions of a bike insurance are and ride safe!
